Play Sand & Playgrounds · OceanGrain+

A silica-free play sand for playgrounds and sandboxes.

Smooth, rounded grains of natural white sand, sized to your gradation and delivered to specification. It's calcium carbonate rather than silica sand, so by composition it's silica-free. We're the world's largest supplier of oolitic aragonite, a pure, renewable mineral harvested from shallow Bahamian water.

Where it goes

What goes in the sandbox

Most of the play sand we ship goes into sandboxes and into the open sand areas at parks. Same material either way: white oolitic aragonite, sized to the gradation you ask for. The grains are smooth and rounded rather than angular, so they're gentle on bare feet and on hands. And the material is non-toxic and dust-free, so a child digging in it isn't raising a cloud.

It's also specified for synthetic sports and play surfaces. Tell us the gradation and we'll tell you what we can hit.

Why OceanGrain+ works as a play sand

A sand, without the crystalline silica

If your spec calls for a play sand, this is one. A natural sand of oolitic grains, sized to your gradation. It's calcium carbonate, not silica sand.

Smooth, rounded grains

Bahamian oolites are ovular grains built from needle-like crystals. There isn't a sharp edge in a truckload. They resist breakdown and stay stable under UV, which matters in a box that sits out all year.

Friendly to skin and lungs

Aragonite is non-toxic and dust-free, which makes it friendly to skin and lungs. It's a very pure calcium carbonate: CaCO₃ typically runs at least 96%, with iron oxide held to a maximum of 80 ppm.

Sized to your gradation

We run coarse through ultra-fine, depending on what the spec calls for. Send us the sieve you need to hit and the tonnage.

What our play sand tests at

These are the typical values for our oolitic aragonite. We publish them so you can qualify the material before you ever call us. The table and a downloadable spec sheet are below.

Play sand buyers look first at the sieve analysis for gradation, then at the physical properties: white granules at a density of 1.70 g/cm³ (106.5 lbs/ft³). The chemistry rows, CaCO₃ minimum and Fe₂O₃ maximum, are the purity behind the non-toxic, dust-free profile. The published sieve analysis is one standard gradation, and tighter gradations are available on request.

Supply and delivery

The bulk play sand supplier behind the order

Aragonite Source is run by the former principals of Marcona, who harvested aragonite at Ocean Cay from the 1970s into the early 2000s. We dig in close conjunction with the Bahamian government, at sites that have to test uniform and have to renew.

Millions of tons sold, hundreds of customers, 50+ years on the water. We have never had a rejected load, and we have never failed to meet customer demand.

You buy in bulk from the people who harvest it. Delivery runs on our own truck fleet plus rail out of our own yard. Consistent, and on time.
